In 2017, for The Balvenie Tun 1509 Batch 4, David C Stewart MBE curated 23 casks - 13 American oak barrels and 10 European oak sherry butts - from the distillery's aged stock. All were then transferred into Tun 1509, which resides in Warehouse 24, for a few months prior to bottling. Tun is a unique marrying process that enables mature casks of various vintages to be merged, creating a unique expression of The Balvenie that is more than the sum of its parts. On the release of Tun 1509 Batch 4, Malt Master David Stewart MBE said: “Stock management is a truly special part of my role as Malt Master, and Tun 1509 Batch 4 is a great illustration of how marrying various casks can result in an expression of superior quality.
