A tasty rye whiskey from the famous Wild Turkey distillery. This drop was first introduced in 2007, and was an instant hit.
Age-stated Kentucky Rye whiskies are becoming harder and harder to find, which is perhaps why this 6 year old dram is so popular.
The bottling is named after Wild Turkey’s distillers, father and son duo, Jimmy and Eddie Russell. The Russells also hand select the casks that make up this whiskey.
The whiskey is matured in barrels with a high, level 4 char, which imparts a slight smokiness to the final product, and also creates a natural filtration within the barrel – meaning the rye’s rougher edges are rounded out.
The bottling is made to the standard Wild Turkey rye mashbill: 51% rye, 37% corn and 12% barley – so this is a rye that leans towards the sweeter, rather than the spicier, end of the rye whiskey spectrum.
Russell’s Reserve 6 year old offers up notes of vanilla, honey, rye bread, cinnamon, mint, citrus rind, plenty of charred oak, boiled sweets, candy apples and ground white pepper.
Bottled at 45% ABV, this is a warming, flavoursome rye that is at home in cocktails as it is served neat.
