Glenkinchie is one distillery of the Four Corners of Scotland by Johnnie Walker. An elusive Lowland single malts, Glenkinchie is located about 15 miles from Edinburgh. The farmland surrounding the distillery is inviting and homely, much like its whisky. It was founded around 1825 by brothers John and George Rate. When the brothers went into bankruptcy in 1853, the distillery was converted into a sawmill.
It wasn’t until 1881 that a certain Major James Grey restored the site of the Glenkinchie whiskey business. The malting floors were turned into a museum of malt whisky when the distillery stopped malting its own grain in 1969. Presently, Glenkinchie offers tours through its distillery and malt whiskey museum. In 2013, the Glenkinchie 12-Year-Old vintage received the award for Best Lowland Single Malt. Additionally, they have received a Gold Award in Green Tourism for their commitment and effort in sustainability.
The Glenkinchie whiskey has never lost its classic Lowland flavor profile. The Lothian - the Scottish Lowland area in which it is situated – is known for farming high-quality barley. After 1969, the malt switched from the distillery’s own to industrial maltings. Glenkinchie only has a faint smoky taste, despite the maltings being softly peated. Creamy, fragrant, and with sweet notes of biscuits and cereal, it is a friendly whisky for new and experienced whisky connoisseurs alike.
