Blair Athol, founded in 1798 by John Steward and Robert Robertson and originally named 'Aldour', is one of Scotland's oldest still-active distilleries. It briefly closed in 1932, but was revived and rebuilt in 1949, with two additional stills added in 1973. The house style is strongly characterized by richness, spiciness, ginger and nuttiness - this is also reflected in its 12-year-old single malt offering. Its flavor has slight dryness, prominent sherry notes, a hint of herbal mintiness, and a unique sweet aftertaste.
